What if I don’t fully recover from my workplace accident?

When you get injured at work, you aim to recover and return to work. After all, you have responsibilities and bills to pay.

But what if you don’t make a full recovery? What are your options?

Workers’ compensation benefits

The workers’ compensation insurance through your employer is designed to cover medical expenses, wages and any other costs associated with your workplace injury. Most injured workers recover from their injuries within days or weeks.

However, there are times when an injury is so severe that you cannot fully recover and return to your former position. Your ongoing medical expenses, job loss and limited employment opportunities can lead to financial strain.

If you can return to some form of work, you may qualify for Permanent Partial Disability benefits (PPD) for up to 500 weeks. If your injuries keep you from working, you may be eligible for Permanent Total Disability (PTD) benefits. PTD provides lifetime financial support for people who cannot return to work.

In some situations, your injury may impact your ability to return to your old position, but you may be able to perform other tasks. The worker’s compensation system may provide resources, such as job training or education, to prepare you for a different line of work.

There are times that the insurance company may deny your claim by disputing your level of disability. You are now in a situation that’s overwhelming and emotionally draining. It’s vital that you work with a legal professional who is well-versed in navigating the complex workers’ comp system. They can help ensure that you have the support you need, whether transitioning to a new career or securing your financial stability.
