What is carpal tunnel syndrome?

On Behalf of | Apr 21, 2025 | Workers' Compensation

One of the ways workers get injured is by doing the same thing over and over again. That thing, when taken in isolation, would not be viewed as dangerous, but if done repeatedly over time, it can turn out to be a real problem for the person.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is one such injury. It occurs when inflammation of the wrist compresses the median nerve as it runs through the carpal tunnel on your wrist.

Some of those most at risk are those who work in the most sedentary jobs of all – things like entering data into a computer, or passing items over a scanner at a shop’s checkout. Those in more active jobs can also be susceptible to it. For example, those who work on meat-packing lines, use hydraulic drills on road gangs, or teach racket sports.

How can you prevent it?

If you are starting to feel soreness in your wrist or hand, try loosening your grip or lightening your touch. Taking regular breaks is crucial and stretching, flexing and massaging your forearm, wrist and hand can also help alleviate symptoms. Anti-inflammatories can also provide some relief.

Another option is to ask your employer if they can vary your work a bit more, although that might not always be possible. Make sure you mention it to your employer, though, as there may be alterations they can make to your workstation or set up that reduce the strain. For example, adding something to increase vibration dampening on a handle or providing more ergonomically shaped tools.

A workers’ compensation claim may be necessary if symptoms do not abate. It may cover the cost of treatment and time off to give your wrist the rest it needs.
